Update on PCOS, Metformin….just on me period..

Posted by Administrator on July 6, 2006

Well it has been quite a while since I have posted a personal update…I wasn’t getting any comments and sometimes it seems to be easier to just not talk about things, but here I go.

June 21, 2006

I went to the doctor for my annual “woman” check-up. Unfortunately, because of my disfunctional ovaries it was the wrong time of the month for me to have this check-up.  I called that morning and talked to one of the nurses to let her know, but she said to come on in because I needed to discuss how my liver was still functioning fine and I could start taking metformin. While I was sitting in the waiting room, one of the secretaries told me that the doctor really wanted me to do an exam today and asked me how “heavy” it was.  I was like….um…no…that is why I called this morning.  So, she said ok…then ANOTHER secretary asked me the same thing…I told her exactly the same thing- no, that is not being done today.  Then, when the nurse was taking my wait, etc…she was asking about it also.  I get in the room and the doc comes in and sure enough..she asks too…I said “I don’t think you would want to do that today”..and she said “Oh, it doesn’t bother me at all, but the samples may not come back readable if it is too heavy.” So, needless to say, we re-scheduled.  I am sitting there thinking…why is everyone so insistent on looking in my snatch today?  I mean…women…have you ever experienced that??

Anyways, on a brighter note (I guess) I told the doctor my liver was functioning ok and she said I had two options [for the PCOS]- birth control or metformin.  She said if I wanted to prevent pregnancy, we would go with the birth control..but if I didn’t the metformin.  So, I chose the metformin.  She also prescribed me some prenatal vitamins and took a measles test (she said she needed to take a thyroid and something else- but I told her I had already had that done in my two-thousand other tests).  I asked her before I left about diet and the worst part of the day arrived:  She said I needed to be on a diabetics diet.  Little carbs and little sugar.  *Groan*

June 22

I started the metformin.  The first day was…to put it nicely…not fun. Plenty of trips to the bathroom with nothing but runs (sorry if TMI)..I ate no carbs (or virtually none) and I think the low blood-sugar got to me because I almost passed out several times during the day and almost didn’t make it through work that night.

June 23rd- Today (July 5th)

Slowly throughout the next two weeks my stomach started to adjust.  I have to make sure that I don’t eat too much sugar/carbs and that I eat frequently.  For me, those have been the main things that have got me through. One day I made the mistake of eating a powdered donut…..big no-no…Last Wed. I was puking my guts out and couldn’t figure out why until today I had a revelation that the drinks that I thought were sugar-free… weren’t.  Otherwise, I have been feeling a lot better.  Tommorrow, I go up to a double dose (850mg 2xday) and hope that I will be ok.  Some people seem to be fine raising the dose and other’s don’t..Wish me luck!

Food recommendations:

For anyone just starting metformin, some good foods (in my personal opinion and what other diabetics have told me) are: peaches, grapes, & plums (low-glycemic index), bread (even though u will probably be told not to eat much- some is ok)- wonder bread only has 13 grams of carbs per slice which is much less than some of the other white breads and isn’t much more than that low-carb bread that tastes like cardboard.. Low-sugar pudding is pretty good…low-carb icecream isn’t bad…eat meat, meat, and more meat (including seafood)…celery, broccoli, lettuce, a little bit of carrots (they aren’t the lowest carb food, but they will work).  Make sure to stay away from deserts full of sugar and carbs (including COKES!).. And potatoes & rice…Potatoes are almost straight carbs..What else…hmmm…cheese is always good…eggs are ok…if anyone comments I will try to think of what else…

Hey… My doctor put me on Metformin also, but I ended up taking myself off of it. It was making me sick almost every day! He never mentioned changing my diet at all or anything, so maybe I will take your suggestions on food and try starting it again. It’s about time I get serious about getting pregnant!!

Thank you for posting those suggestions!

Just wanted to throw in a positive story. I have been on Metformin for three weeks (the time release kind). I am up to two a day and I have not gotten sick once. I started eliminating as much sugar and enriched flour as possible before I went on it, so that could be a reason.

    p.s.: whole wheat sucks!

  3. Thank you both for your comments! I assumed no one was reading this at all. I am about to post an update not that I’ve been reminded :-)

I was just prescribed metformin for my pcos but i am not trying to get pregnant i just want to be releived of the symptoms especially the moodiness..i tried the pill but i hated how it made me feel. i am afraid to start it because of the upset stomach and my doctor never did any pre tests to see if it is ok for me to take this…is that ok? should i cut out the carbs and sugar for weightloss or because of there interactions w/ the med.any feedback is appreciated :)

  5. Administrator said

Well, the metformin is suppose to help even if you are not trying to get pregnant- it is suppose to regulate your hormones. My doctor did not run any tests, but many doctors do. There aren’t really any tests to make sure it is “ok”- they do them more to see if it is “needed”, but if you have PCOS then it will probably help. You probably won’t feel great too begin with- the stomach problems aren’t nice, but cutting the carbs/sugar somewhat (or eating the right kind of them) will definately help the interactions with the medication. Just try to eat small meals frequently (or a snack at least), but try not to eat too many carbs or sugary items. The metformin alone normally helps with weightloss when you have PCOS because it regulates your body to act “normal”, but diet is a big help also….let me know if you have any other questions I can possibly answer :-)

I felt alot bette after reading this. It feels like there’s noone that understands….unless they are actually taking it themselves! I started taking metformin on the 14th (almost two weeks)…and yes I am so sick of being sick! I have my good days and bad days! Did your doctor tell you how long you have to take this medication. I mean after you get your period are you still inclined to take it forever (whether you want to get pregnant or not) ….also do you suggest staying away from pasta?

  7. Very Very True! I am sorry I didn’t respond back yesterday, but I was actually having a bad day myself! I don’t know if it was because I was stupid and ate a chinese donut (you know the sugar kind) the day before, but I wouldn’t doubt it. Anyways, I called off work and stayed in the bathroom way too long. The doctor didn’t tell me how long I have to take the meds…the way she put it I will basically have to take metformin or birth control. I actually already have gotten my period- I hadn’t lost it like some women…I just never knew how long it would take to get here (may be 30,40,50 days), I just never knew! I don’t know if I will take it forever..I don’t really want to get on birth control (even if I don’t want to get pregnant), but I know I don’t want to deal with the symptoms either.

And about the pasta…..hmmm….well, of course pasta is high in carbs- but what I have finally came to realize is everything in moderation. If pasta doesn’t make you sick, then eat it in moderation (and if you can eat wholewheat pasta, of course, it is suppose to be better for you). I don’t think pasta really makes you sick, but pasta sauce (that is a different story). It is funny because some many of the things that will make you sick on metformin aren’t even high in carbs or bad for you. Every woman is different of course, but peanut butter…oh no…not for me..I promise you peanut butter will make me sick for days…I tried even a small piece of pizza- big no no there too…Unfortunately, it is all trial and error… :-) Hope this helps!

i have been on metfomin for about 4 months now. i’ve only briefly experienced the side-effects when it was time to increase my dose. diet and excersize are a huge part of PCOS treatment, but there is NO food that will make you sick just because you are taking metformin. also, there ARE tests that need to be performed to diagnose PCOS which should include ultrasounds (to confirm the presence of the cysts on the ovaries)and a complete blood work-up to be completed the 3rd and 21st days of your cycle. if you DR has NOT done these tests, i would greatly question their diagnosis. most medical insurance will want the tests anyway so they con confirm treatment and OK any prescriptions you will need. when all of that confirms PCOS your DR will do another blood work-up to make sure liver function is normal. there are serious side-effects for liver patients, and for anyone taking metformin, one of which can be fatal (lactic acidosis).

  9. I did have an ultrasound, though bloodwork was not done. I would beg to differ that there are not foods that make you sick when on Metformin. If you do not have any-lucky you, but the thousands of women on SoulCysters discuss this, and I have spoken to people I know on Metformin that have certain problems processing foods. This is normal! I am well aware of the side effect of lactic acidosis- I have articles about it on this website, but the chances are extremely rare and my liver functions properly….

  10. Cheley said

I totally agree about the foods. So foods that I eat have BAD side effects while taking Metformin. One thing I did that seems to work is to take a vitamin at night (this way I didn’t feel so sick when I woke up in the morning). I just read a pretty interesting website :http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045911.php Do you take the B-12 supplements?

  11. Administrator said

Thanks for your comment on the foods :-) I do not take the B-12 supplement, but I am on prenatal vitamins anyway (doctor says you need to have plenty of folic acid built up even before pregnancy) that has B-12 in it. I would recommend some sort of vitamin though because the Metformin does have an affect on the B-12 absorption. At first I was getting pins and needles (legs falling asleep) all the time, but I think this was a lack of the vitamin B’s- now it does not seem to be that bad…

Hi – just surfing net for stugg on Metformin – supposed to be doing an essay due tomorrow but feel to ill – stomach in knots – my endo started me on 2 500 mg tabs for two weeks then up’d it to four – i got really sick and felt bloated a lot- thought i was going to die at work the other day so I called him (endo) and he said I should go back to two at night – I feel so bad tonight I’m gonna try one a day – sick of being sick two – I must admit had very large weekend – lots of alcohol, not much excersise and stress/work – still good to read these comments – I’ll be back when i feel morelike talking – chev -

  13. Well, I can tell you a few reasons you are sick. First-you should never have started off at 2 500 mg tabs in my opinion. 1 is hard enough on most people. I started at 1 850 and then went to 2. That is just my opinion, but even my doctor stated that you need to gradually build up to it. Try 1 for a couple of weeks and then if you can, try two in a couple more weeks. Also, lots of alchohol is a BIG BIG no no when taking metformin. A drink or two a week is ok, but any more and you are headed for trouble. Latic Acidosis, though very rare, is not as rare with large alchohol consumption…I wish you luck! Let us know when you are feeling better.

  14. Cheley said

So, how long did it take for you to actually start your menstrual cycle (or to regulate it) after you started taking metformin?

  15. Administrator said

Well, I have only been on it 6 weeks or so- so I can’t really say (the last period already came shorter though)..guess I will know in a week or so if this one comes “on time”…I think for most women the average is 3 months though, but I guess it all depends (considering women with PCOS are so different)…

  16. Cheley said

Did your mouth get really dry with a funny taste too? This is still driving me crazy!!! Also do you know if you can still take aspirin or tylenol?

  17. No, mine didn’t, but some women get what they call “metal mouth”..I think it is about a 10% chance..It should get better before long.

And yes, you can take most things with metformin (aspirin or tylenol is definately ok!) :-)

  18. BTW….just got my second period on met! 32 day cycle :-)

  19. Cheley said

That’s great! I’m happy for you! I’m still waiting on mine it’s been a month now that I have been taking metformin….so hopefully it will come soon! I talked to the doctor yesterday and I told him how I am still feeling sick……..(I have good days and bad days) so he told me that instead of taking one in the morning and one at night that I should take them both at night at the same time and see what happens. I hope this doesn’t make it worse (because the dosage will be so strong all at once… each pill is 500 mg) I’m hesitant about doing this but I guess I will give it a try! I’ve lost alot of weight too, have you?

  20. Actually, I have only lost 4 pounds- but have lost at least that many pants sizes…It is the strangest thing. I am what they call a “thin cyster” though- I was not overweight when I started the metformin. I take 850 mg twice a day. I don’t know if taking them both at night will help or not…but I have heard some people do that. I just make sure I each regulary whether I feel like it or not. That is what keeps me from being sick…Good luck!!!

  21. Cheley said

Thanks! I’ll keep you posted on how it works. I’m one of the “thin” ones too, I was 120 now I’m 108! It might have to do with me watching all the carbs too!

  22. Wow…you did lose some weight! 108 is tiny! Watching carbs certainly can do it. I am not nearly as strict as I was on carbs- maybe that is why I havent lost more..but I still don’t eat the junk food, drink cokes, etc..(though I do eat the bread!) Good luck, let me know!

  23. Cheley said

So………I’ve been taking 2 of the metformin pills at night now…….and although I was skeptical about the outcome it actually works so much better I’m not hardly as sick as I was everyday! Still no period…..wondering
when it will come……..just wanted to check in with u and keep ya posted!

  24. I’m glad you have got over some of your sickness! Sorry you haven’t gotten your period yet- but give it a little time.. It takes some women a while to get their hormones regulated. Plus, a 1000 mg may work for you and it may not. Some women need more than that….but like I said, give it a little time and we’ll let me know. Thanks for keeping posted! I’m doing fine on my end
    :-)

    hi there,
just wanted to thank you for all your feedback.
i just started metformin today and was really worried.(getting light headed)
    you guys helped a lot.
    thanks,
    s

  26. I am glad. Hang in there!!! The first part is really rough, but it does get better…make sure to eat! I know that is hard…but get you some carrots or fruit…something “natural”…they saved me!

    :-)

  27. Cheley said

Just wanted to let you know that I
“started” today yeah! Although these cramps are wonderful (lol)! I just happy it finally came!!

  28. Congradulations!!! It is funny we are actually happy when we get “it” when most people groan…but it lets you know the medication actually works!! Maybe you will get regular now…I have been doing pretty well, but have been cheating and eating some stuff I shouldn’t. I made the mistake of eating pizza hut cheesesticks one night..I thought it would be ok because there was no sauce…but boy was I wrong…and I paid dearly for it…I groan just to think about it! :-) Good luck sweetie!

You have an interesting web log here. I also have PCOS and I was diagnosed almost two months ago. It’s really not silly how we look forward to our menses. It reminds me that everything we are doing to regulate ourselves is worth it. I wanted to respond because I know the answer to one of your questions. Yes, with good diet and exersise SOME women have been able to get off metformin, but the challenge is to keep the cysts under control. But my doctor told me that with good daily exersise and a more or less diabetic diet, that you can gain a normal mense without the use of drugs. The only thing that I caution is this: when my first doctor thought that I had cysts on my ovaries, she did nothing and said everything would be fine. At that time I weighed 160lbs. Only 6months later, I weighed 295, and had lost my period. I lost insurance because of a family move, and was terrified I could not afford to help whatever was wrong. I finally went to a new doctor though, who quickly diagnosed. I couldn’t do an exersise regement if I tried…I would go for 10minutes of light work and need an hour nap. So even though I tried to regulate weight and exersise I still gained 135lbs because of the insulin resistance and various other issues contributed to PCOS. To make a long story short, I am most grateful to Metformin and I will lovingly eat my whole wheat, no/little sugar foods. I do have one question for you though; to see how you respond to others. My mother-in-law (its never good when you start a sentence with that), who is panicked that my husband and I won’t be able to have kids, doesn’t understand what is going on. How did you explain PCOS to people without divulging every detail the condition of your ovaries?(sarcasm) As soon as I say, “I can’t have that; too much sugar” people freak. I can’t seem to get around it. Help if you can.

  30. Well…that is a tough one..because I go through the same thing..I normally just say “I take a diabetic drug” and “those things make me sick”. Of course you have the nosy people that want to know if you have diabetes and if not what is wrong, etc. etc. I normally just tell them that I am insulin resistant which is sort of like borderline diabetes. I know that isn’t the best factual definition, but it seems to satisfy people’s curiosity and at least give a half way decent explain. Good luck, Rachel!

  31. Cheley said

I agree! I say the same exact things! Don’t feel like you have to explain yourself…..it’s none of their business…it’s to personal to have to tell everyone.

Jessica – i have also been on metformin now for 5 weeks (1000mg a day) and i dont really feel anything. I haven’t really lost any weight either! I have not had a period for a year now but my Dr syas it takes at least 3 months to know whether the metformin is really working.

I hate the waiting but theres nothing we can do!

    Hey All!

I was diagnosed with PCOS back in August 2006…

This has been a wild ride I must say…My stories with Met, GOODNESS, I could go for days…But to those who haven’t found “the way” to take Met, I strongly recommend taking it with milk or yogurt, I wowuldn’t do anything else!! It’s been a blessing…I’m on 1000mg of Riomet (liquid Met)

I haven’t gotten my AF yet (my last was in July), however, I did ovulate first…Which is great because I didn’t even know that could happen! I have been temping and I’m also TTC, so I was so happy to BD at the right time!! Good Luck to you ladies, and for the people that doubts Met, it works but in different ways and at it’s own time…even backwards!!!

I’m in my 2WW…Wish me luck!!!

    Hi
I was just diagnosed with pcos but I don’t have all the normal symptoms I’m not overweight (115 lbs) and I have always had a regular period (28-29) days without fail I’m 32 and it’s always been this way. My doctor put me on Metformin 2 weeks ago right after I ovulated bc my LH & testosterone are too high. Anyway I had an hsg procedure done last month as well today I am 5 days late for my period and I’m wondering if this has happend to anyone else(?) as a result from taking the metformin.. Meaning someone who historically always has had a regular period before metformin. Also I got a yeast infection last week too. I haven’t taken a pregnancy test because Im over the negatives I have always gotten back. Is there anyone out there like me?

  37. You would be surprised. There are alot of “abnormal” PCOS cases, but considering you have never been late and got a yeast infection, you might want to take another PG test. I know about being “over” false negatives- believe me..You take so many tests for so long and finally just say forget it..Who knows, maybe it is the metformin, or something else- but I have never heard of women with “perfect period” and ovulation actually having the opposite occur once they start Metformin (I’m not claiming to be an expert though). Have you changed your diet? I know most people do when on Metformin because of the nausea and GI problems. If you have kept certain things out of your diet this could change your cycle. Good luck!

  38. **In reply to everyone else**

I apologize for not individually replying to everyone- between moving, starting a new job, and school, life has been hectic. I actually quit Metformin a few weeks ago. I was no longer TTC and frankly was just tired of feeling sick. If I ate every couple of hours (and ate the right things), then I would feel ok. But trying to eat “right”- and frequently- at the same times, proved to be almost impossible for me. Maybe I am just weak. But the losing weight for me continued and continued. I know some women would be thrilled, but after buying new [smaller] clothes and then not being able to fit into them a month later…well I miss my shape…missed chocolate….pizza…all those things that you miss on metformin…I am not advocating anyone quiting Metformin if it is helping them, and I am sure when I am TTC again and struggle (yet again)that I will give it another shot. It just seems easier if you have something to look forward to (a reason for taking it)…….

    Good luck ladies!!!

Nicki #36, did you get pregnant?? I would like to know. I just started Metformin 500 mg for PCOS am also thin and have no other symptoms except cysts on ultrasound and have not been able to get pregnant. I have regular periods and am wondering if I am going to change that. I am really worried as the two week wait is terrible and I don’t want to lengthen it!

Hey everyone. Thank you so much for your stories. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years ago. I took clomid(50mg) right away and ovulated on the third cycle. Then, stupidly, I stopped taking the clomid because I wanted to try to ovulate on my own. Well it didn’t work and so I went back on clomid about 2 months later for probably about 3 or 4 more cycles (I always had to take medroxyprogesterone to start my period though). It didn’t work, so I went off it again and tried vitex for a while, but it made me have my period very lightly for a long, long time, so I quit that. Then a few months ago, I started clomid(100mg) again for 3 more cycles and nothing happened. So now my doctor put me on metformin instead. I am only on my third day right now at 750mg a day, but I have not felt any sickness really at all. After a week, I will be going up to 1500mg a day. I was also a smoker, but am now on my 8th day without a smoke, which may help as well. Anyways, I am not overweight, but I do have cysts and a small amount of acne and a bit of excess hair. I will also be going for a hysterosalpingogram if and when I finally get a period to check for any scar tissue or blocked tubes or anything. My husband and I have been trying to concieve for about 2 years and I am freaking out because I am so scared that I will never get pregnant and my husband wants a baby of his own SO bad. Anyways, this is my story and I would absolutely love it if anyone had any comments or suggestions to help me. Thank You.

    Hi
I was just diagnosed with pcos three weeks ago. My doc put me on Metformin (1000mg/day) I was sick as a dog the first day I took it and even had to stay home from work. I feel 100% better now and dont even feel like I’m taking anything at all. About six months ago I started taking Vitex and it helped with my periods. I stopped to see if I could have one on my own, and haven’t had one since. I was wanting to know if anyone takes Vitex along with Metformin and is it okay to do so?

Jody I am right there with you! Though, I have never taken Clomid I am also TTC and my husband and I want a baby more that anything right now and its starting to feel like it will never happen. We have been trying for about a year and a half. It is alway touch and go without having reg. periods. The stress of not getting pregnant can also make it hard to concieve. So just relax and I’m sure everything will work itself out (thats what Im telling myself atleast) Well, the best of luck to everyone!!

I was very sceptical about Metformin, I must confess. I started at 500mg twice a day for 6 months. Within the whole time of me taking it I still had no period! So after awhile I got pretty frustrated and got off the Met. After months of still not having a period I went back to the doc and he increased my dosage to 1000 twice a day! I know what you’re thinking and yes it made me very sick but you know what, 4 days ago I finally got my period for the first time in two years! My advise to everyone out there ttc: if the Metformin is not working, definately up ypur dosage! It will make you very sick but you should start to get your periods and hopefully conceive. Have faith, I know I do!

  44. Jody said

Lisa, thanks for your reply. I try to not stress but that is incredibly hard, as you probably know. Also, about taking metformin and vitex at the same time….I was seeing a naturopath while I was taking vitex for a few weeks and she said that it should be ok to take the two at the same time, but I would check with your doctor just in case.

  45. Samantha McKiinney said

Hello. My name is Samantha McKinney. I got metformin a while back and didnt take it. Now I am starting back after seeing the stories you guys left. MY husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a long time over a two years and nothing has happened. Can anyone tell me how this helps? I dont know much about it. You can email me at samantha.j.mckinney@gmail.com. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from everyone :) !!!

  46. Samantha,

Metformin regulates your hormones because women with PCOS have imbalances- the cause behind these balances is usually tied to blood sugar. Your blood sugar gets under control (with diet as well), which in turn regulates your hormones, which in turn will normally cause you to have a normal period and to ovulate (if you have “cysty” ovaries, then these should also clear once your hormones are stabilized and you ovulate normally.)

Hope this helped a bit. You may want to check out Soul Cysters (I have the link right above the blog stats). There you can find about anything you want to know about PCOS and they have great forums, as well as scientific data that explains this better (it is pretty late so if my explanation makes no sense, I apologize). Anyways..The site is made specifically for women with PCOS (and their spouses). It is completely free, but you do have to register if you want to post on the forums. You are welcome to read them without registering though. It is an active community, and there are some very knowledgeable women there- many of which are TTC. There is even a section just for that purpose.

    Good luck!

    Rachel

I started me period today!! Yay!! I have only been on metformin for 13 days and I already started. I’m so happy about that! Now if I ovulate this month I’ll be bouncing off the walls! If I get pregnant…..well I don’t think I would stop smiling for at least a month! Anyways, today after I took one of my pills I got a bit dizzy and lightheaded and weak and shakey. It scared the crap out of me because I am always so worried about lactic acidosis. Has anyone else had this problem? It makes me want to stop taking the pills, but I know that they are working, so it’s hard. Any tips would be awesome. Thank you.

  48. Jody,

I can almost guarantee that your dizziness came from low blood sugar. Though you have to control your diet while on metformin for it to work as well as it is suppose to, it is important you get enough carbs also. Try eating fruit, etc. When I starting taking metformin I tried to cut out almost all carbs and stayed deathly sick. Try to eat small meals/snacks every 3 hours or so. That should help immensely!

    Good luck!

    Rachel

Thank you very much Rachel. Yeah, that makes sense because I didn’t really eat at all yesterday and then at about 6:00 I tried to eat too much I think. So I guess I’ll have to be more careful of what I am eating and when. Thank you for the pointer.

I have been on Metformin for 3 months now. I have been on it before for 3 years. I was never told to change my diet. I have lost the weight before and I was only taking the 500mg XL. I am now taking it 2 times a day. I take it once in the morning and once in the evening. The key thing is not watching what you eat, but taking it while you eat. I tried the waiting 30 mins to an hour and taking it. I would always get sick and stay in the bathroom. I finally got fed up and called my doc. He told me if it says take with food, then be all means take it with food. I have to honestly say that I have not gotten sick to the point where I have to stay in the bathroom, but if I do get sick. TRUST ME, I only am in there a very little while, then I am good to go for the rest of the day. Thought I would tell yall come suggestions.

    Hi!
I finally got the time to check in with you! I know it’s been a while but I have been extremely busy! So, I have been taking metformin for approximately 5 months now! I must say once your body gets used to it you really do start to feel a lot better! Because believe me the first 2 months were awful! Well so far so good I have gotten 3 periods since I started taking metformin. Hopefully I will get one this month too! They are not coming on the exact date every month…..give or take a few days difference. The only problem is I was 124lbs and now I am 98lbs! I have lost tooooooo much weight I can barely fit my clothes now! I am going to go and see my doctor asap because soon I will look like a walking skeleton! Now that my periods have been regular we are really considering having another child. I keep hearing mixed opinions about staying on metformin while pregnant or getting off of metformin while pregnant. Alot of people I read about said they wish they would have stayed on metformin while pregnant because they believe they might not have miscarried…. then I read about people who kept taking it that said they had healthy babies and vice versa. Has anyone heared anything concrete as to should you keep taking it during pregnancy or not? They say that it hasn’t been proven that while taking metformin while pregnant it will not harm the fetus. Anyone with any info on this please let me know! I will keep you posted after the doctor’s visit! Thanks!

Hey everyone. Cheley, sorry I can not be of any help to you. I was just wondering if anyone else has had any problems with blocked tubes and PCOS. I have PCOS and a couple days ago I had a hysterosalpingogram which determined that I have one good functioning tube and one that is blocked. The dye did not help to unblock it at all. I am really freaking out now, and I wanted to know if anyone else has this problem or knows anything about it. Any comments would be awesome. Thank you.

Im sorry to read about the blocked tubes its not like we as having PCOS dont have enough against us. Although I myself cant do the hysterosalpingogram due to numerous allergies so my doctor is skeptical as proceed or not.

I am SOOOO glad to see this site. I thought I was dying of stomach cancer or something. I’ve been taking Metformin for PCOS about 3 wks now, 1500 mg a day, and I’m so sick. From reading on here its got to be what I’m eating. This morning I drank a Mt. Dew and later ate a pop-tart, then had spagetti around 3 pm, I’ve been throwing up all day. I’m starving but afraid to even drink water. Please, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Is milk ok? What do you eat in the mornings? Thank you dear lord for whoever started this site ;)

    Hi everyone!
My story is this. I have a 2 year old son named Hunter. In April of this year we decided to try and have another baby and had no luck. I have been having lots of pelvic pain so I went in for an ultrasound and bloodwork and lo and behold I have pcos. I have put on quite a bit of weight about 30 pounds and would love to take that off! I have had irregular periods since I was a teenager and suffer from anxiety and depression. No excessive facial hair though. I started taking metformin at the end of November and a week later i’ve started a very light period-well, i think it’s my period but it may just be spotting. Anyway, once in a while I get light headed but that’s it. I got very nausous for awhile but now I just make sure I eat enough and I feel just fine. My question is: how long until my chances are good to get pregnant” I would like to get pregnant between April and July. Is that a realistic time for the metformin to take effect? The doctor also placed me on clomid alone over the summer but I obviously didn’t get pregnant then my period just stopped for 3 months and now I am lightly spotting. It used to come about every 35- 40 days but it just kept getting further and further apart. sorry to ramble on… it’s just nice to have someone to talk to about this that knows what i’m going through.

Alexis, my doctor had told me that I should try metformin for about 3-6 months and if it didn’t work by then, then we should try something else. So I think that you are definitely giving a reasonable amount of time for it to take affect. This doesn’t mean you will for sure get pregnant by then, but as long as it makes you ovulate regularly then you should keep taking it. Hope his helps.

  62. Alexis said

Thank you for responding. I’m glad to talk to other people going through what I am. I wish the best of luck to you all.

I also have PCOS, and I know how you feel, I’ve been put on Metformin AND Birth Control (I’m 18- definitely not planning on getting pregnant) I’m on both because I also have Hypothyroidism.

The Birth Control is actually what I being used to treat my PCOS, and but I have to stay on it if I want to actually have my period, and not just suffer everything else that comes with it…
I also had problems with the Metformin the first time, none of the people that I talked to told me about changing my diet, but another suggestion that I find didn’t upset my stomach was bagels with just a little cream cheese. Thank you for the suggestions of foods, the bread part was really cool to know.
I’m one of those people who can’t stand to take more than one dose of 500 mg a day… just thought i should add that…
anyway, this is a cool site- thank you for posting it

My Doctor insisted on metformin first then adding clomid in 2-3 months if the metformin did not make me ovulate. He started me out on 2000 mg a day i know alot. When i asked about adding clomid which will happen in january he said it will highly increase my chances of concieving and maintaining a healthing lining in the uterus making to were i could carry. He said women who have PCO have a thicker lining making hard for embryos to implant and making the eggs very very fragile. Just thought i would add that since i did ask these question from my doctor and try to respond to who asked about success rates. I hope all that helps somewhat

  65. To All:

Hi everyone! Sorry I have got a little behind on responding, but it seems like there are enough people talking amongst themselves to keep the flow going. I will try to respond to several people tonight- so check below if you were asking for a response of some kind.

  66. Chelsee,

Thanks for your comment! I am glad someone thinks it is a cool site. I don’t have too much time to update it like I would like, but try to make additions now and then. Though I have stopped taking metformin (have for a while now), the bread is really one thing that got me through it. Even though it is high in carbs- it isn’t like eating sugar and it sticks with you. It seemed to help my nausea so so much! I did low or no sugar on most everything, but when it came to bread- I just got the White WonderBread or something similar- for Kids. It actually has less carbs than the normal believe it or not- sometimes less than wheat! Don’t get me wrong- if you like wheat- great for you! But that was one thing I just couldn’t get use to :-) Good luck Chelsee and everyone else!

  67. Lucy,

Metformin will help regulate your periods even if you don’t want to get pregnant…just make sure that you use “good” birth control. (There is actually a warning on the label about an increased chance of pregnancy :-) ) However, birth control alone may work just as well for you. Most women that take metformin either want to get pregnant, have other PCOS symptoms that they want to decrease/get rid of, or have blood sugar problems/diabetes. If you don’t want to lose weight, get pregnant, and don’t have a problem with birth control- I would go for the birth control. This is just my personal opinion though. Both are meant to regulate your hormones, just in a different manner. Also, both can have side-effects- but the metformin can be pretty rough (especially in the beginning).

Good luck in what ever you decide!
    Rachel

  68. Rhonda,

Thanks for your comments :-) Somehow I really doubt you are dieing of stomach cancer- just suffering from the metformin blues! But yes, I groan of just thinking of the stuff you ate while on metformin!

    1. For starters- the Mt. Dew has enough sugar to make you sick (while on the met). So does the pop-tart. And finally, spagetti! Oh my goodness. Unless you had plain spaghetti, it is no wonder you got sick. It is the sauce, not the pasta or meat, that makes you sick. Tomato Paste has more carbs that will spike your blood sugar than most things out there. (Believe me, pizza will make you feel like your going to die too- at least it did for me) Just look on the back of a package- a single package- of ketchup. 2 or 3 carbs at least. Think of all the sauce- made out of ketchup- that goes on that stuff…..Yeah….lol…

    2. Milk was fine for me. “Natural foods” always made me feel better- fruits, milk, regular bread- simple, plain, not neccesarily low in sugar/carbs, but definately the right kind if not low.

    3. In the mornings, I would eat some toast (maybe with sausage and eggs- meat is fine- little to no carbs) or fruit. I lived on fruit when on metformin. It was my snack food. Grapes, apples, bannanas, peaches, etc. I started out only eating the fruits on the “low-gylcemic” or lower sugar lists, but finally started eating them all. They definately make you feel better than sugary/processed snacks, etc.

If you are still reading, I wish you the best of luck!

Hi…. just found this site after finding SoulCysters… really great & helpful sites!
Thanks for all the extensive Met info, tips and discussion! :-)

I started on Met almost 3 months ago… (only a couple of trips to the bathroom, barely any side effects lucky me) … a few weeks after being diagnosed with PCOS, which I guess I’ve had since my teens but only started with symptoms in the past couple of years:
    -extra 37 pounds,
    -some acne (face, chest),
-depression (not because of acne/weight/baby, just WEIRD mood swings mostly at night!)
-my period is regular enough but after blood tests we found that despite the period I’m not regularly ovulating (!!!)
…no wonder after 8 months having stopped with the pill no signs of pregnancy!

My doctor told me to (together with and / or despite Metformin!) go on a low glycaemic index / GI diet. I barely eat any sweets and no junk food, I’m also vegetarian so I’d been eating way too many of the “bad” carbs, so now I gotta really concentrate enough of the good stuff from most food groups (I eat dairy products and eggs)… and watch out for too much red reeeed wiiiine…. ;-) (I know, pretty dangerous with Met)

I got one question, actually uh… three!

    1. any of you guys know how much of, let’s say, red wine I can take when I’m on Metformin?

    2. how long before or after a pill (I take it twice a day) I could have a little wine? (I’m not that big drinker but every other night with dinner…)

    3. anyone here knows about nutrition? Like, I’ve been reading how it’s good to take certain vitamins together with Met, I’d like to know which ones I should be paying most attention to, not only for trying to stay healthy / eat better but also for helping with conception and keeping the baby (if it ever happens–pause to knock on wood!) healthy as well (being vegetarian and all).

Thanks for any help / tips.

And good luck to you all facing PCOS, going through Met’s side effects, and those trying to conceive!!! :-)

  70. Hi there! Welcome to the discussion! I am definitely not an expert- but I will try my best to answer your questions.

    1. Try to minimize your alcohol consumption as much as possible. While on metformin, the easiest [and best] thing to do is to act as if you were diabetic- meaning, follow the basic rules diabetics do. So, as far as wine goes- the “rule” would be that you could drink one to two glasses a week-safely. It is great to know you have had little side-effects. I abstained from alcohol while on metformin (because unfortunately I was not so lucky with side-effects), but have read that alcohol increases these symptoms. I don’t know if it would bother you or not, but I would not drink more than a maximum of a glass a day because of the risk of lactic acidosis. This risk is pretty much nonexistent if you take the normal dose, and have normal liver function, etc.- but drinking too much could turn that nonexistent risk into a real one. I wouldn’t want to even take a chance on drinking more than a glass or so- but that is just my personal opinion, of course. You may drink a gallon a day and be fine..but as I said, it just isn’t recommended because of the possibility of dangerous side-effects.

    2. I don’t think the time you take the metformin in relation to the wine would have much effect. However, it would probably be best to let the metformin “digest” a little with some food before trying it. As you said you don’t have any bad side-effects, then it may not matter in your case. But to decrease the chance of nausea, I would say wait 30 minutes to an hour after taking it…..

    3. Prenatal, Prenatal, Prenatal. Metformin does tend to “zap” certain vitamins, and if you are trying to conceive as well- prenatal vitamins are the way to go. My physician gave me these when I was trying to conceive and on metformin. You really want to build up a larger-than-normal folic acid concentration, for one. This will help keep you from miscarrying, etc. Even when I was no longer trying to conceive, my doctor said it would still be good for me to keep taking the prenatal vitamins because they would give me what might be depleted from taking the metformin.

And finally….as I said to begin with, I am not an expert- only speak from experience and much research I have done. However, I highly recommend you go get the prenatal vitamins though. This is coming from experience, research, and straight from an obstetrician…I’m not saying they will help you with conception- but they will help prevent birth defects, etc. Hope this has helped a little!

    Good luck!

    Rachel

  71. Lakinni said

Thanks so much for answering Rachel!!!

I’ve been taking folic acid for over 8 months now (ever since me & my love decided to start trying to conceive), and I take a multi-vitamin pill daily as well… I didn’t know that met takes sooo much away in form of vitamins! I thought since I cook so bad sometimes I’d just eat bread or rice and not enough veggies and fruit… so I wanted to take the vitamins to already start getting healthier for the baby…
now I’ll definitely talk to my doc about getting those prenatal vitamins (I take that they are much stronger or a bit different than the normal multi-vitamin pills right?)
I’m also reading a lot more about nutrition to help with the vitamins by eating the right stuff. I have no problem with sweets or fatty stuff (I mean, cheese’s a bit tough to ignore here where I live there are soooo many wonderful sorts mmm…) but sometimes I’m too (shame on me) lazy to make me a salad, even though I love salads!

Anyway, I see I should cut down on the wine ASAP… :-(
I’ll try to enjoy drinking one cup on X-mas veeeery slooooowly… but it will be tough on New Years UGH!
I should be getting used to skip wine during dinner anyway, ’cause if we’re lucky and I get pregnant I’ll be stopping with it altogether.

Thanks again for writing and I do think that from all the stuff you know from own experience and from reading that you are pretty much an experto of sorts, and I’m glad I found this page!

Take care and have a great X-mas, everyone!

I too have PCOS and am TTC. I am on metformin and am working towards 1500 mg/per day. The first month the symptoms were pretty bad, but I found if I take metformin with milk, it goes down easier. I also found that if I eat smaller meals, I don’t seem to have as many GI issues. I started my period within the first month of using metformin, but I am still waiting on my second period…hopefully it will come soon…I’m on CD 40. After readling all the comments on this site, maybe I should start exercising.

Kristina- My understanding is you only take metformin (w/ PCOS diag) if you have a confirmed insulin resistance. Don’t be discouraged about not getting metformin. My sister, who also only had a period 1 or 2 times a year, took provera with clomid and did achieve pregnancy. In fact, although it may not work as quickly for you, she was pregnant with twins within 2 cycles of adding clomid. Good Luck!

    Hey everyone,
I have been TTC for over two years now. Initially, I went on metformin 500mg three times a day, then I had an ectopic pregnancy and lost the baby as well as one of my fallopian tubes. Having nearly died, my husband and I were pretty timid about going back on the metformin again. A year and half later I am now back on metformin. The question I have is, should we be trying to conceive right away or should I wait a cycle to get rid of the uterine lining that has been building up for months (no normal period for about 5 months). I really hate the idea of waiting, I feel like I’ve already been waiting forever, however, if it would minimize the risks of miscarriage, I’d be happy to wait. Does anyone have an answer? Thanks.

It doesnt last long maybe a couple of hours at the most. When i asked a nurse about it she told me she didnt know, but it could be a cyst that is rupturing meaning the medication is working. The office staff at my doctors office hasnt been doing there job ive called like 3 times asking for them to have the nurse i see or the doctor call me back they have yet to do it. I have an appointment in about a week so ill talk to him about it, i was jsut wondering if anyone has had this or if there doctor has told them what causes this

Side effects from metformin, for me personally are brest tenderness, feeling sick, headaches.

To those that are ttc, keep positive as i have heard and read of quite a few women that have got pregnant after their first few cycles.
I also have read quite a few clinical trials and the results. Metformin has been proven to give positive results for regulating periods, weight loss, and lowering of hormone levels, and most important most women seem to get pregnant, it was advised in one of the clinical trial that after six month of being on metformin and if periods are regular but still not pregnant then to combine metformin with a fertility drug such a Clomid, and nearly all of the women monitored did get pregnant.
I have been ttc for over a year, and i do feel very impaitent at times, i feel for all of you that are in the same situation.
Im pleased i found this site its interesting to hear others chat about metformin.

This post, however off-topic it may be, is about Internet freedom. \”Network Neutrality\” — the First Amendment of the Internet — ensures that the public can view the smallest blog just as easily as the largest corporate Web site by preventing Internet companies like AT&T from rigging the playing field for only the highest-paying sites.

But Internet providers like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast are spending millions of dollars lobbying Congress to gut Net Neutrality. If Congress doesn\’t take action now to implement meaningful Net Neutrality provisions, the future of the Internet is at risk.

In the end game, only large companies will afford domains if the communications monopolies have their way with this. This of course isnt new news, but its coming to a head and blogs like this one will be a ghosttown unless all of us figure it our pretty darn quick. I wont post any links, but advise that if you value the internet, and blogs likw this one, that you search Google for \”Network Neutrality\” and educate yourself on this issue as it effects all of us.

I was due for a period when i first started taking the metformin but haven’t had that period yet? Is it possible that the tablets can stop the period from happening? You may think i am sounding a bit dim but am so confused. Have been trying for a baby for 3 years now. Have had one miscarriage in that time too. I am 37 years old and also overweight. I am also on tablets from the doctor to help with weight loss. I could do with knowing about the type of diet you are all talking about as nothing has been mentioned to myself about this. I was told that the metformin can make you put weight on to start with also…..is this true? Any help would be so gratefully appreciated as you dont get good answers from the medical profession when you ask these type of questions!

While i was not diagnosed with pcos, I do have a few of the symptoms, Have been on metformin since november at 500mg a day then in Jan. got bumped up to 1500mg a day. Hopeing this works for me, have already noticed a weight loss (YAY) and was wondering if anyone had ever taken Vitex and Metformin at the same time, and glad to find a place to talk about this.

Wow! This is a pretty cool site. I didnt know so many other people had this problem! My story is a little different in the fact that..I used to have very regular periods and then when I got married 2 years ago I got on birth control due to the fact that newlyweds generally are not financially stable to have children. So a year after we were married I got off of birth control and did not have a period for 9 months. I was so devistated. So I went to my gyno and he put me on metformin..well I had a very bad reaction to it and it caused me to not be able to breathe very well. Not knowing that this is what it was, I continued to take it for about 5 months, every day struggling to breathe. So when I finally connected the two, I stopped taking it. Well..I guess I had taken it long enough that it gave me a period. I had a regular period for 3 cycles on my own..I was so excited! I thought I was no longer broken (hehe), while I was having my cycles I was also doing clomid. No success :( Now it is February and I did not have a period last month or this month. So now I guess I am back to square one but I do not know what to do because I cannot take metformin again..I honestly thought I was going to die. Every day was a struggle to live because I just wanted to quit breathing and give up cause it was so hard to breath. My husband and I want children so bad, this is so hard! Also, my gyno said that I should get a hsg, but..that wont help because I am not even having a period, so..any suggestions???? This sucks so bad! Oh and another thing…Im not really sure why I was put on metformin in the first place because I was tested for insulin resistence and I did not have it, but I was never tested for PCOS…so how do I know I have cysts on my ovaries? Gosh…sometimes I hate being a girl!!!!!

Hi, it’s me again. I quit taking the metformin as it was making me nauseated in addition to the diarrhea. I also noticed I was breaking out in a rash (in addition to the nice acne on my chin and neck). I have an appt this afternoon and am considering going back to BCPs. I have not had a period since October. I’ll let you know what happens.

And, Dana, I have read that certain carbohydrates will cause some stomach problems.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in June of 2006. My doctor started me on 500mg of metformin twice a day. As of September I have been on 1000mg twice a day. My periods are not consistent. My last one was in December and before that I was having them every other month…is this normal or should I be talking to my doctor for a higher dosage?

  95. Diana,

I would speak to your doctor. 1000mg twice a day is normally a high enough dosage, but you should have your hormones monitored to see if things have actually improved or not. Have you regulated your diet as well as taking the medication?

    Hang in there!

  96. Hi everyone! Sorry I have not had the time to respond to many people’s comments, but keep them coming! You guys seem to be doing well supporting each other- and that is what each one of us needs! I have not had too many issues with not having periods-though sometimes I wish that was my problem. I have horrible periods (and am actually having one right now). They say the normal woman only loses 2-3 tablespoons or so during their period- I think I lose that within about a 10 minute span of time. Irregular hormones can be a curse it seems…but I just can’t stomach the thought of being back on metformin. It seems to work wonderfully for many people, but I emphasize with all of you that had to stop because of the nausea and stomach issues. I just never felt right, and had to watch every little thing I ate because so many things made me sick.

Hang in there everyone and keep those comments coming!
There are many out there going through exactly the same thing and having other people there for you is half the battle!

Hello, Thank you for posting your experience. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2003 and prescribed Metformin. I have to admit I hated taking the Metformin three times a day and the fact that I felt nauseous all the time did not help. Now that I am trying to get pregnant, I am thinking that it was not in my best interest to stop the regimen that my doctor prescribed for me. I would like to know anyone knows of a dosage of Metformin that will allow me to take one pill once a day or maybe two or three pills at the same time once a day?

    Hi all!
Wow, this is a great place to learn about Metformin. I have not been “officially” diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor things my hormones are “off” and is trying this drug to regulate (or start) my periods. I have been TTC for a year but without a period it’s kinda difficult! We tried Provera and Clomid, but it didn’t cause ovulation. Then my doc. said maybe my insulin and sugars were “off” and started me on Metformin, 1500mg a day. I got my period after taking it only 4 days, is it possible for it to work that fast???? Also, is anyone else REALLY tired on Metformin? I already eat a fairly low carb diet (mostly I eat veggies, protein, some fruit, and oatbran only in the AM). I haven’t had any stomach problems that send me to the bathroom. The only thing is feeling really sick to my stomach after breakfast, do you think it is from the oatbran? That is the only time of day I really eat grain. Also, I am a runner and run about 25 miles a week, do you think this metformin is making me tired because of my activity level? Also, what is the lactic acid thing people are talking about?? I know when you run lactic acid builds up in your muscles. Am I in danger b/c of my running. I am currently training for a 1/2 marathon and on the weekends, do my long runs…9 coming up this Sat. I have so many questions ,,, sorry ,, any help would greatly be appreciated. :)
Natalie ;) zzzzz sleepy on Metformin!

I just started taking Metformin because I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. My symptoms were heavy non-stop flow for 3 months straight and a years worth of unprotected sex with no pregnancies. I don’t know if these are common symptoms and am almost convinced that she just chose pcos because it’s so common and I’m overweight. Anyone else have these same symptoms? I also was put on birth control for 2 months and that didn’t stop my flow only slowed it down now I”m on straight metformin and my flow is heavier then normal. My doctor wont listen to me….can you help?

  100. Cin,

I would shoot for the extended release version of Metformin. I personally did not try it, but if I get back on Metformin in the future, that would be what I would go for. I have heard from several people you do not get as sick from it…..

    Good luck :-)

    Rachel

  101. Steph,

I can’t say I can help- because I’m not a doctor *but* I have went through about the same experience as you. I actually am not overweight, but was diagnosed with PCOS because of my “holey” ovaries- they look like swiss cheese from all the eggs that have not released. I have very heavy periods and have no need for birth control, unfortunately I may say. Did your doctor do hormone tests? PCOS is a hard problem to diagnose and to diagnose correctly. Some doctors are relunctant to say anyone has PCOS, while others are likely to overly diagnose it. I would say the heavy periods are likely a sign of a hormone imbalance- which Metformin is suppose to help. Though I did not get pregnant while on Metformin, I will say my period normalized (compared to the usual anyways). If you have just started and do not get sick- I would stick with it for a while. It supposedly takes 3 months to completely get in your system- I have read this from medical reports, and heard it from diabetics as well.

I hope this helped a little, and wish I could say more….some of us just have very little luck!

The best advise I can give is to find another doctor. The most important thing (to me) in a doctor is to have someone that listens and knows what they are talking about. If they are listening- drop them and find someone who will.

    Best of wishes,
    Rachel

  102. Natalie,

Hi there :-) To answer your question, I do not believe metformin can work in 4 days. I am not saying it is impossible- I have heard of people becoming pregnant after being on metformin for a month, but I would say that is likely due to timing or luck. As far as being tired, I *stayed* tired on metformin. I always was tired and weak. One reason this may be in your case, is that metformin lowers your blood sugar by making your body more reactive to your own insulin production. It is good that you don’t each many carbs- especially while on metformin- *but* make sure you eat some. Otherwise, you will likely feel sick and tired continually. Around 10% of women on metformin always have an uneasy feeling- unfortunately I was in that group. Even when I got past the nausea, I stayed tired and felt like the muscles I once had were gone…If you are a runner, you need fuel for your body. Metformin makes it where you need more fuel to keep the same blood sugar level- so make sure you eat small meals throughout the day!! As far as the lactic acid thing goes, that is extremely, extremely rare. You being a runner should not be an issue. The few cases of individuals that have gotten lactic acidosis [and yes, I have read the case studies] from taking metformin came from a major overdose, a person’s poor health (i.e., liver problems and old age, etc.), or possibly drinking heavily for long spans. It does sound strange to me though that you have sugar issues when you exercise so much and have such a good diet. I am not saying it is impossible- but normally those two things will keep an individual’s sugar level under control [even those that have diabetes] for a long time.

Anyways, Don’t apologize for questions! I haven’t had much time to answer, but I [as well as everyone else, I am sure] are here for you!

    Hang in there!

Keep running, get some sleep, and make sure to eat!!!

    Hi I am Elizabeth,
I am 25 years and I have PCOS since 6 years and I was married 3 years back and we didnt wanted to have a child at that time.As suggested by doctor I was using Medroxy Progestrone to regularize my periods but it did not help me much.Since last year I am trying to get pregnant so I stopped using Medroxy, because of this i was not getting periods and due to irregular periods I was unable to get pregnant. So last year June my doctor gave me Metformin 500 mg twice a day and I did not have any side effects and I got periods after 2 months, but I was bleeding heavily and It did not stop for 2 months,i told my doctor about this but she asked me to continue metformin but I was loosing lot of blood, so i discontinued.I changed my doctor and she did all the tests and she also put me on Metformin 500 Mg once a day for a month from Dec 6th 2006 and increased the dose to 1000 Mg after 1 month, and I finally got period on Feb 27th 2007 and I am still bleeding.I dont know how long my periods are gonna continue? Can any one suggest me or any one had a similar problem like me?

I, too, have PCOS. It has been 1 year and 2 months since my body has initiated a period on it’s own. I have been on Metformin since September of 2006, with no luck. Dosage was increased to 2000mg a day in January of ‘07 – I am STILL not responding.

I go back in April for another follow up, and my gyno has said that I will need to decide between Clomid (baby time) or birth control. I was always always like clockwork until I went on birth control for ten years – i feel that birth control messed my hormones up and really dont want to go back to that as a remedy. Im feeling discouraged…other women in my family have had to have historectomies because of this in their early 30’s.

Is anyone else having a similar problem? From what ive been reading, it sounds like im alone here…

i have pcos, and i was just put on metformin, and i wanted to know how bad it would be to have drinks once in a while? i’m really scared something bad might happen!!!

  107. Elizabeth,

Thanks for your comments! I am a little slow to respond sometimes due to work and other obligations. If you are still bleeding after a long time, then it sounds to me like you are still having a hormone imbalance. Are you bleeding heavily or are you just spotting? I know many women that have had the same issues…

Here is a slightly “technical” explanation of what might be occuring:
What is more important than the actual act of bleeding is the abnormal hormone levels that lead to irregular periods in women with PCOS. Women affected by PCOS do not ovulate on a regular basis. As a result, the inside lining of the uterus – called the endometrium – is exposed to the hormone estrogen for great lengths of time without being exposed to the hormone progesterone. It is the cyclic rise and fall in both estrogen and progesterone that cause menstrual bleeding. In the case of PCOS, there can be prolonged lengths of time without the production of progesterone. During this time the endometrium is continuously exposed to estrogen. The result of this prolonged estrogen exposure is the buildup of the endometrium. When the endometrium becomes too thick, heavy and irregular bleeding can occur. [Heard of endometrious??]

    Other common causes:

    Endometrial polyps
    Endometrial hyperplasia
    Endometrial cancer
    Uterine fibroids
    Abnormal thyroid or pituitary function
Use of certain drugs like steroids or blood thinners (for example, warfarin or Coumadin)
Pelvic inflammatory disease or other infection
Stress, change in diet or exercise routine, etc.

Hope this helps a little. As much as I hate going to the doctor myself, only tests will tell what the actual cause is. Many times doctors are quick to stop at the basic tests- tell them what is going on and that you want to know why. If they won’t do any tests to find out, then go to another doctor. It stinks, but sometimes is neccesary…

    Good luck!
    Rachel

  108. Anonymous,

While heavy drinking is no way a good thing on metformin, having a drink now and then is o.k. I would limit this to one to two glasses of wine (or the equivalent)a week to be on the safe side.

    Thanks!
    Rachel

  109. Julie,

Believe me- many, many women on PCOS feel discouraged ESPECIALLY when TTC. You are not alone at all, even though it may seem that way. Did you change your diet when on metformin? If you didn’t change your diet, the drug can only do so much alone. Also, I know many women who have had to combine clomid with metformin to have results… Metformin seems to work miracles for some, but then others do not seem to benefit from it in the same way. I myself had more regular periods, but got no closer to concieving than before…

All I can say is hang in there. If your diet is already good (low in carbs and sugar, etc) and the metformin is not working, you may need to try alternate methods or have more tests to determine what is the exact cause.

    Best of wishes,
    Rachel

    Hi Rachel,

Good Morning. Thanks a lot for your response. I was so happy to see your message.I felt some sort of relief after reading your comments.Daily I use to look for your comments.
I have continous flow of bleeding its not like spotting. I also get clots in between also. its been continous for 20 days,I took doctor appointment she is so busy so i got it on 27th of this month.Daily I am taking Iron tablets also.
About the diet I am trying to reduce carbs but I cannot control to eat rice which is high in carbs once a day.I am eating 1/2 cup of rice daily. Basically I am native of India so we are more use to eat rice than any other thing.Does it have any effects??? Or do I need to stop rice completely. Please give your advice.
    Hope your health is fine.
    Thanks
    Elizabeth

  111. Hi again Elizabeth,

I appreciate your comments! They are so kind. A 1/2 cup of rice a day shouldn’t be any big deal…I would not quit that. There are certain types of rice that are lower in carbs than others (I believe long grain rice is the best, if I remember correctly). Everything is about moderation, and I think eating rice would definitely be better than eating something like pizza for instance…I hope things will look up for you soon and your doctor appointment goes well. Please let me know how it goes and what they say…

    Thanks!

    Hello All,
I have been taking 1000 mg of Metformin to increase it by 500 mg every week until I can get to 2000 mg. Since I have increased my dosage, I have muscles have been achy, (mainly in my back and sides) is this a normal side affects and will it go away?

  114. Kelli,

It sounds to me like you are suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), as I did when I first starting taking metformin. When you are taking metformin, you need to remember to eat small meals/snacks throughout the day.

    Hope this helps you…..

Do you have any other symptoms along with the muscle pain?

    Thanks,

Thanks, I will try that. I do notice that after I work out, I really feel light headed, and I try to eat something afterwards. Do you know how long it takes for the medicine to start working? I have been on it almost three weeks, and I know I am not up to the correct does yet, but I really have not seen any effects of the medicine, excpet for the light headedness, and pounding heart. I am still periodless and have not lost any weight. I will try eating small meals, and hope that the dizziness subsides. Thanks for responding.

    Hello,
I am new to this list. I have had PCOS for as far back as I can remember. I could not get pregnant and rode the roller coaster with the fertility docs and the drugs… I became pregnant (after clomid, pergonal, and a myriad of other drugs and procedures) finally with LTT or GIFT as it is sometimes called.

To back up a bit. From my first menses I NEVER had a normal period. I had ones that lasted two weeks and then would go almost a year until another. Add to that being a non-sexually active teenager and you really feel like you are going crazy! It really upset my young life.

When I finally got married and wanted to have children it became a real issue. LIttle did I know that this thing that was plaguing me, was most likely going to keep me from my dream of having a family.

My infertility treatment was during the latter part of the 80s and early 90s. My husband and I really went through it. The tears, the anger, the stress, were all there. Back then there really wasn’t the metformin being used. Once I successfully became pregnant, I was regular until the twins (yes twins) were about six months and I had stopped nursing. The solution then was to put me on birth control.

My weight has ALWAYS been a problem. When I was 10 years old I weighed pretty much what the other kids weighed at around 100 lbs. Then when I turned 11 and started my period my weight went nuts!

I began “storing” fat everywhere! I was 180 lbs by the time I was 13. I had almost doubled my size in three years! My parents attributed it to overeatting, but that was not the case. It was something going terribly wrong with me.

As the years past the weight crept up on me (5-10 pounds a year sometimes), my husband would often comment on how little I ate and that it seemed to go right onto my hips:(

I recently stopped taking the birth control and began metformin. I lost 60 pounds in the first six months with little diet modification. My dose has been so far throughout my treatment, 500mg/day. My doctor was astonished, as was I. I have had other friends go on this med and am interested in the amounts that various docs are using.

I thought my case to be extreme with the amount of extra weight I carried. Perhaps there are people out there who are being misdiagnosed? I say this only to compare my experiences with others. One of my friends was put on the graduated regimen and in just a few weeks went from an initial dose of 850 to 3400/day! She became extremely ill.

I’m wondering why there is so much disparity in the medical use of this drug?

To add to this, I NEVER had any side effects, just nicely paced weight loss. OH and my period is now once every 29 days REGULARLY and only for about four days!

Just following up from my last post…the Metformin FINALLY worked…lasted 6 days. Just waiting to see if it will happen again this month, and then we will be trying for a baby.

In response to previous post – my diet and exercise have not really changed much, and i dont eat lots of junk. We cook meals at home, we dont go out. Lots of veggies and fruit…I think my body just took forever to respond to the metformin because it took me five years to realize what was going wrong with my body (when it finally came to a screeching halt they gave me an ultrasound).

Such a frustrating condition…my heart goes out to anyone who has to deal with it!!

I have been on Weight Watchers for 3 months and haven’t lost a pound. I went to my dr for cramps in my right side and he said it was a cysts. My periods are normal. I am taking 500mg 3 times a day. I have had no symptoms at all. I am not sure if I haven’t been taking it long enough or what. Does anyone know how long it takes to notice a difference in weight? I need some encouragement!

I must agree with everyone on here… This blog is so helpful. Although PCOS is unfortunate,,I feel comfort in knowing that I am not alone. Thanks ladies!

My husband and I decided that we wanted to begin having kids so I made an appointment for a consultation to discuss pregnancy with my GYN’s new LPN. We have been trying for the past year with no success. The nurse immediately considered my increase in weight, acne, absent periods, lack of alertness etc and send me for blood work. The results showed high Testosterone levels, which confirmed her suspicions that I have PCOS.

I began taking Metformin on Friday, April 13th and thank God, Aunt Flow came to visit me today. Let me tell you, I have never been more excited and happy to have her come through,, cramps and all! I plan on calling my GYN tomorrow to determine next steps. I am just wondering, how long are you to continue taking Metformin once you have had a menstrual cycle? I will ask my GYN tomorrow, however I thought I would post the ? on here.

    Hi Rachel,

How are you doing? I think you are busy these days.
I got my second cycle on 17th April but it is very very less (5 to 6 drops a day). I am still continuing Metformin. My mom is in India and she is also a doctor. She has sent me Fertyl( Clomiphine citrate) tabs to me. She asked me to take it for 5 days from the the 5th day of the period. But I am confused because now I am not bleeding normally, its very very less. I am not sure what to do. I also have a doubt that If I start taking Fertyl tabs from today for 5days, I am supposed to ovulate on 8th to 14th day,but what if I am still on periods by that time,It will be difficult to have intercourse right?because my periods have not yet regularised and its just my second cycle after taking metform. I am very confused… Can you please suggest me?
I called the doctor to ask about it but she is very busy today.
So I just thought you might have some idea about it.

    Someone please help me :(

Im becoming incresingly depressed that not one doctor is helping me. I was diagnosed with PCOS over 5 years ago and went to a gyn. He said unless i wanted to get pregnant there wasnt anything else he could do for me.

my symptoms are hair on the sides of my face, and pain in the pelvis, and absent periods since i started aged 13. I get spotting also.I wasnt allowed to take dianette anymore last year due to the increased risk of clots (even thought id beeen on it for 4 years with great results)

I have always been a slim size 8 to 10. Last year I noticed that i started to put weight on but put it down to over eating in winter and christmas. In January I started going to the gym 4-6 times a week with extra cardiovascular circuit training inbetween. Last time I did this I toned up in no time and even though i didnt loose any weight the muscle definition was great and clothes fit perfectly. Now its a different story. Ive toned up but cant loose any weight from my stomach/hip at all-its all just spongy fat, and its making me soo unhappy. My sex drive has gone down, and no one is helping me at all! and I cant fit into any trousers.

I crave sugary foods after meals all the time! and by the looks of things really need to go back on the pill!

I have also been experiencing diahorria. I went to the doctor and we did tests for gluten and collitus, iBS etc but everything came back clear. Bread is the worst for making me feel like a house!

Metformin sounds like something that would help me…any ideas….im at my wits end!

Because I was only diagnosed with this disease a little over a year ago, my Endo. put me on Glucophage (I am also on Mircette (bcp)) This is only the first week on the gluco. at once a day, but I am experiencing a weird ache in my legs, particularly at bedtime. It comes and goes in a wave of achiness.
I am a healthy eater but I have always had a carb craving that would get the best of me at times. While on Glucophage I have not had any weird carb cravings. YAY!
I take multivitamins every day (one-a-day, vitamin E, calcium w/ vit. D). I do drink alcohol on the weekends: a couple of glasses of wine on Friday and Saturday (my one vice!) I do experience a little stomach upset only when I lie down, but the aches in my legs are what’s worrying me a little. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, does it usually go away in a week or two?
    Thanks,
    Debbie

I have been taking metformin for 4 years now. I kind of understand that idea of low glycemic foods. However, I have one main problem besides the fact that most fruits and vegetables add to the gas that metformin causes. I can’t eat these things without having something else to offset the gas. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi All,
I’ve battled with weight problems all my life. Tried to live healthy, exercise regularly etc etc. I started Metformin in June 2007 and have since lost 10kg (with NO CHANGE to my diet or exercise to what I’ve been doing for the last 20 years!!!!…..go figure???!) I’ve found that my appetite has decreased to the point that my sugar levels get low too often so I have to learn to eat regularly (which is hard after a lifetime of not being ‘allowed’ to eat for fear of weight gain). I’ve also found that I’m growing increasingly tired which is unusual for me. Am doing everything normal (balanced diet, exercise, sleep, 2L water everyday etc etc), but the tiredness is getting worse and worse. Has anybody got ideas on how to overcome it? My mum is an insulin dependant diabetic, so I know most things about how a diabetic needs to eat and keep things balanced, I’m just wondering if I’m missing or overlooking something???

Thanks for posting. I recently started taking metformin 2 months ago. I got really sick at the beginning w/frequent trips to the bathroom. I’ve had to readjust my diet, because the sugar and starches made me sooo sick. i got my period after 3 months of not having it and it’s definetly not as heavy as it usually is. It’s like it’s regular. :) Thanks!

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17; I am 33 now. At the time I was diagnosed, every doctor I went to said that PCOS had no long term implications. A friend referred me to a doctor who is 2 hours away from where I live. I almost didn’t go because of the distance. Anyway, he did ALL of the bloodwork (which had never been done before). My levels were ridiculously bad. I had a Glucose Tolerance and after the lovely drink of lemon-lime flavored glucose, my insulin level was 347! My Triglycerides were 4x what they should have been, my Cortisol levels were very low, on and on and on. My doctor is an OB/GYN – Functional Medicine doctor. He doesn’t believe in synthetic medications. I am currently on a treatment that he says is the best he’s ever known of. Since he’s studied PCOS for over 30 years, I went with it. It’s very expensive. However, he’s promised me “monumental” results in 3 months. I just started Metformin along with all the other supplements. Yesterday was my first day on it. I can’t believe how tired I am! I do have a tad bit of stomach issues going on, but no nausea, thank goodness. Will the tiredness go away soon? I draw blueprints and could barely move the mouse around for the better part of the day. A friend at work has a glucometer, so I checked my blood sugars. It was 115 after breakfast and 94 after lunch & metformin (2 hours after). I will do a fasting tomorrow. These numbers seem ok to me. I thought perhaps I was verging on hypoglycemia, which would make me really tired. Any suggestions on how to overcome my lethargy??? I really enjoy reading all the comments. I’m glad I stumbled on this website while checking out all the Metformin sites out there. Thanks for starting it!

I can only tell everyone that until I started to excersize on a consistent basis my tiredness went away. For me after I would come home from work and within an hour I was taking an hour-hour in a half nap. I didn’t have energy to do anything-even arts and crafts which I love. This was a daily routine for me. I went and saw a nutritionist and a health psychologist. I said enough is enough, and found a workout partner and modified my eating (not dieting-that is a dirty word). I have lost about 25 pounds since I began in December. I feel good and have my energy back.

I have been on metformin for a while and I still get facial hair, and I swear my hair is thinning. Does anyone else still encounter these symptoms while on metformin?

I do get frustrated when health care professions think that because I am taking metformin I have diabetes. I was at a new dentist office a while ago and even though I wrote that I had PCOS they still thought I had diabetes. I was frustrated with him!

I am glad there are others out there because the people I have encountered do not know what PCOS is.

I started to take metformin last Monday. I am too thin, 100Lb, 5′5″. Last week , I took only one pill per day. This week, two pills per day, next week will be three pills per day. I need to gain weight instead of losing weight. What kind of food do I need to eat?

Hi Louise (from April 30 2007)

I’m new to this site and I use to go through the same as you, i.e. weight gain and the need to have something sweet always after dinner. This became my ultra nemesis and no one could understand why i HAD to have a sweet food or dessert (even I cldn’t understand)!

Of course, this must have had some contribution to my weight gain and fat around my stomach which just wldn’t shift whatever I did!

My doctor put me on metformin about three months ago. I have lost about 5 pounds and almost lost interest in food and don’t get as hungry as I used to. Also, after eating the little that I do, I don’t really want dessert afterwards anymore!

I must say though, that I haven’t had a cycle since starting metformin in early May and am a little depressed about it as we really want to get pregnant. I also feel tired earlier than I used to in the evenings. But other than that I think I feel great – just hope metformin will work in the next month or so!

    Hey all.
Here is a little bit of positive feedback for once.
I have never had regular periods since I got my first at age 12 and 2 years ago when they stopped completely I went to the docs to find out what was wrong… NOTHING. No one could tell me what was going on after several ultrasounds, blood tests, pap smears etc. so then about 2 months ago when I went to a gyn I was finally diagnosed with PCOS! and was put on metformin for it.
I only take one tablet a day and have NEVER had any diahroeah or vomiting or anything like that from it. I have had a few dizzy spells but thats about it.
and after being on it for only 45 days I have finally gotten my first period!!! YAY!
I have changed my diet completly to low GI although I still enjoy a drink or something naughty occassionally, I have also taken up exercising everyday, whether it be dancing, running or bike riding. It has been quite a journey but in the end it is so worth it.
You all need to listen to what the doctor tells you with metformin especially.
Take the correct dosage and stick to it. It also definately helps with the diet and exercise!
DONT GIVE UP GIRLS!!! HANG IN THERE!!!!!

I have been on and off metformin and glucophage for a couple years now and no matter what I do it makes me ill to the point I have lost jobs bc I was so sick. I have pcos but I fall under the insulin resistant part not the cyst part. I have horrible periods when on metformin and sometimes when off I actually end up in the hospital bc normal pain killers just don’t cut it. I have been trying to get pregnant for 5 years now and nothing has worked. Does anyone know if metformin is the only drug to help pcos? Ps I also have fibromyalgia and the pain from that makes it extremely difficult to do any exercises.

    So here is my story:

I’m 31 years old. I’ve been TTC for about 5-6 years. I took bc pills for a whole year hoping that AF would come and be normal after I discontinue it. Well, it didn’t come. For 2 years prior to me being on bc pills, I never had a period. After I stopped the BC pills, for a whole year, I didn’t get a period either. I was frustrated and decided to ask my doc for provera to induce AF. The doctor said that if I get AF after taking the Provera, then that means that my body is responding to the meds. After I got AF, it gave me more hope. And then I took another round of Provera and AF came again. This time, the doc put me on Metformin. (Also, he ran about 11 tests, I can’t remember what they all are, but some of them are: Antibodies, estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, and some other ones. They all came back negative and I almost fell off my chair when I got the phone call that there is nothing wrong with me.) This was back in October/November. I got my first natural AF without bc pills on Dec 5th. And then again on Jan 26, and then again on Feb 22 and then again March 25th. I would say that being on Metformin 500 mg x 2 a day helped so much. I’ve always been a thin person until I went to college and that was when my weight sky-rocketed and when my periods became irregular. Lets say that even though I didn’t have all the symptoms of someone with PCOS, I had a feeling I had PCOS. It was through researching online that I self diagnose myself before the doc confirmed it. Sometimes, you have to do your own research because others won’t. When your Bio clock starts ticking, you must do everything in your power to convince your doc to let you try metformin and/or other meds that will help make you normal again. Through trial and error, you’ll find what’s really wrong with yourself. I have a strong feeling that I will get Prego soon. I will update you all on my success when it does happen. I am very thankful that I am able to convince my doc to let me take metformin. This drug does wonders. My periods are normal now and they’ve never been this normal since I was 16. I wasted 15 years of my life when I could have been diagnosed correctly. Please don’t put it off if there’s a slight chance that you might want to have kids someday because it might be too late.

Hi, i was diagnosed with pcos in October 2008 and was put on Metformin 500mg in November 2008. My doc told me i could take upto 4 a day which i did for a while and became pregnant in Feb 2009. Sadly however, i lost the baby which i had been trying two years for and now i have a problem. Following my miscarriage at the end of Feb i had a slighty heavy period in March which i believed was the after affects of the miscarriage. However i am now 6 days late for this months peiod and all pregnancy tests are negative. Before i started taking the Metformin the dates between my periods did increase and i only missed one in August 2008. I do not have a clue about what is happening at the moment and am now thinking that the reason why i am late is because i took over a month off from Metformin to get my body over the miscarriage or maybe it is because i am only taking 2 tablets of my 500mg a day now(although i did go down to 3 tabs in Jan because they gave me a bad stomach) It is very odd as i am getting several pregnancy symptoms and the slight period pain which i have had since last Thursday, has now stopped. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be happening please let me know as i do not wan’t to make an Dr’s appointment yet.

    Thanks

I have had pcod for a very long time. symptoms first started to show up as far back as pre-pubescent when I would get shaky and sweat and have to eat something quick. I stated skipping periods at age 15, and finally at age 24 it was confirmed pcod.

Until then I just learned to try and cure myself because there is a separation between the endocrinologist and the gyns. Sometimes I would tell the docotor what she needs to do etc… they havent been up on how to deal with this until the last few years, and still it is not really enough. Typically they do not know what do do for us, we end up trying to cure ourselves and going online looking for support and answers.

There are several medical journals out there that have done studies now published. One interesting fact is they found that most women with PCOD have a immature insulin receptor, this is a genetic defect., They also are finding ties to PCOD being a autoimmune disorder as well, and medications like Naltrxone are helping the body fight the effects of PCOD on tissues by tricking out immune systems into increasing… so they are finding stuff out. Sorry I don’t not thave the citation right now- google turns up allot of info.

I am now 32, and I have had to try and control my body in any way possible, and I am hoping this metformin I am taking will help me gain control over my body. I am not the typical pcod person, I get my periods on time every month but only after I learned to control them by gaining and loosing weight, (5-15 lbs per cycle!), which can turn into a eating disorder in itself! Belly fat is a killer for me, I have to make sure that I do not get any or I get sick all over again! Sometimes I get frustrated because I do not look sick, and the doctors think I look great-and most of the time I do not have symptoms when I go in. But, im actually queitly battling my own hormones and body to be well….If I eat too much I can stop my period, if I do not eat, and run allot and go to they gym, my period does not stop, and if I do not have a certain percentage of body fat I will not get my period. I also get dermatitis around the middle of the month, so far on the 1000mg of metformin I have not had the dermatitis on my arms and legs, I have more energy and I am timed at night but I was moving too fast in life anyway and needed to take a break!

Sometimes at work I have had to go take a power nap when i first started- try some good organic coffee! I found that many of us are hiding our feelings from the world, I feel uncomfortable telling my boss that I have a disorder that may make me call in sick for work one day, or go take a power nap, but now I am opening up, I told my coworkers I am taking the metformin and I hope to have it help me get rid of circulating horemones that are affecting my organs.

If you have PCOD you have to live a very strict contolled life, its not easy at all! Any little upset in life could make my go into a ‘flare up’ where everything is out of control pysically, and I would get sick.

I can say one thing- I will miss my testosterone levels ! : ) I think the metformin has been making a change in that area so far…that’s the tired feeling I think…

Hey everyone im was told i had pcos when i was 20 yrs old. I had no problems with my weight untill i started getting older. I wasnt what i called thin but i wasnt fat either i was in between. Anyway my periods never really came normally since i was in my teens, Ive tried clomid once to get pregnant but it didnt work.So i decided to eat better and exersize. And after i lost alot of weight after trying for a awhile i finally had a little boy who is now 4yrs old. And right after that i had another baby boy without even trying.. who is 2 and a half. So it can happen if you loose weight and eat right.Ive learned when ever i was thin i would ovalate on my own. But when i started to put on weight thats when all the problems started happening.I am now on metformin and bith controll… Because i put on alot of weight in the past year in ahalf and my periods stop coming. Its been like ayear since i had a period.Ive only been on it for alittle over 2 weeks with birth control but im going to stop taking the birth control once ive completed this month but ill continue with the metformin for how long i dont know.
